What causes the pain?
Soft tissue conditions often do not show up in radiographic studies. When soft tissue has been injured, or even chronically tight, it forms scar tissue. While necessary for healing, scar tissue may stick to adjacent structures restricting range of motion and may cause compression over nerves or blood vessels. This condition alters the texture of soft tissue, which an experienced A.R.T.™ provider can diagnose and treat.
What problems can you treat with A.R.T.™?
Many soft tissue injuries can be treated with A.R.T.™ including injuries to muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments and fascia. We treat specific problems, for example:
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Sports injuries
- Work injuries
- Repetitive strain injuries
- Acute and chronic strains and sprains
- Back and neck pain
- Headaches and migraines
What does a treatment consist of?
A.R.T.™ uses motion to fix the problem. Once the injury has been assessed, the provider uses hands on treatment and patient motion to “free up” the problem areas. We break up scar tissue and adhesions that form within soft tissues or between soft tissues and other structures.
Treatment duration and frequency may vary depending on the severity and complexity of the injury. However, most patients experience rapid recovery.
I’ve heard A.R.T.™ hurts. Is that true?
When you are being treated it is common to feel some discomfort as the scar tissue is mobilized. Most people find it is only temporary. Afterwards, clients often report some general soreness in the treatment area, similar to after a workout. The discomfort should never be severe or longstanding.
What training is required to perform the Active Release Techniques™?
In order to treat using Active Release Techniques™, each professional must complete extensive hands-on instruction and written/practical testing. These techniques allow the therapist to palpate and treat muscular, fascial injuries and nerve entrapments. We have several physiotherapists who are trained to use the Active Release Techniques™. They have taken the upper, lower and spinal A.R.T.™ courses with followup courses after completion.
