About our physiotherapists
Our team has been chosen because of the unique blend and diversity of treatment approaches and techniques. Regular training and courses are a mandatory aspect of our team culture in order to provide our patients with current care practices.
Our Physiotherapists provide our patients with one on one care. They then work directly with our knowledgeable kinesiologists and physiotherapy support staff to provide further exercises and modalities to add extra value to your care.
What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is used to increase mobility and function before or after an injury. It can focus on both prevention and rehabilitation. It can involve a variety of treatments including exercise, manual therapy, acupuncture, electrical stimulation and other modalities.
What training does a physiotherapist have?
Physiotherapists have extensive training. To become a physiotherapist, you must have completed an undergraduate degree and then complete a 2-3 year post-graduate degree in Physiotherapy. To become registered a physiotherapist must pass a written and practical provincial exam. We are governed by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario and are held accountable to a high standard.
What services do your physiotherapists offer?
At Haldimand Physiotherapy Centre, our Physiotherapists are well-rounded and have taken a variety of post-graduate courses. We have extensive training in acupuncture, manual therapy, Active Release Techniques (A.R.T.), pelvic health therapy, exercise prescription, orthotic prescription and therapy, pilates and postural education and electro-therapeutic modality prescription.
Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist?
Unless you are referred for OHIP physiotherapy or for post operative knee / hip replacement surgery through “Bundled Care Hospital Funding”, we do not require a note from your doctor in order to assess and treat you; although we communicate closely with your physician in helping you to recover as quickly as possible. Sometimes your insurance company will require a doctor’s note in order for you to be reimbursed through your Extended Health Plan. Call your insurance company or check your benefits package for more details. We would be happy to help you if you need assistance.
How long will each assessment or treatment be?
Each assessment is approximately 60 minutes long and will include some treatment on your first day. An average treatment session may last anywhere from 15 – 45 minutes, depending on what services you require. Motor Vehicle Accident and Work injury treatments tend to average 45-60 minutes as injuries tend to be more extensive and involve a different treatment approach.
How often and how long will I have to attend physiotherapy?
Every patient and problem is different but generally, most people will attend therapy 2-3 times per week. Depending on the extent and nature of your injury, your time to recovery will vary. Some things can be treated in just a few sessions while other more chronic problems may take several months. Most straightforward soft tissue injuries take approximately 4-6 weeks to heal. Chronic and multi-area injuries average 10-20 treatments depending on the complexity of the condition; the frequency and duration to be discussed upon assessment.
